Mary Ann de Lares Norris, VP EMEA of Oblong Industries, discusses the future of work, collaboration and how to engage Millennials with EM360.

Raised in the digital age, Millennials anticipate instant connectivity, mobile interaction and seamless, collaborative technology as standard in their working environment. Businesses must ensure that their collaboration tools not only enable this approach to working, but are also sufficiently future-proofed so that as technology develops and ways of working continue to evolve, their systems are enhancing this development, rather than restricting it.

At Oblong we see gesture-controlled collaboration interfaces as a critical part of this development. It’s quickly apparent that when you’re working with your pixels spread across all of the walls, you need a more intuitive interface to control them. Gesture is the most natural: it allows interaction just by pointing, clicking or dragging across surfaces gesturally with a remote device. The very latest – and most sophisticated systems — also support a multitude of control points at once, from tablet touch surfaces to keyboard and mouse control.

Enterprises and their staff are increasingly distributed across the world. The days of being tethered to a geographically fixed office every day are long gone, and face-to-face interaction is more scarce, driving us to seek ways to collaborate as if we’re in the same room when we’re miles apart. Workspace collaboration technology is evolving to keep pace with the digital, data-centric and IoT explosion, and the modern workplace must meet the demands of this new way of working.

These challenges have given rise to a new concept that is emerging on the business scene — Infopresence. Infopresence is all about the experience of being immersed in information from multiple sources, so multiple users within a room or across multiple locations can collaborate like never before. It is about taking the repository of our private workspaces – which include laptops, tablets, and mobile phones – and having a massive canvas, a 3D immersive visual environment, in which to immerse not only ourselves but also whoever is with us in the room, or at a connected distance, in the same information. Ultimately, we can make better-informed decisions as a group faster, delivering value to the “bottom line” of our organizations.
