The social networking website Twitter is considering reducing its employee numbers by 300, according to a report on Bloomberg.com.
The business information service says Twitter “may eliminate 300 people”, which is about the same number as it did last year, and about 8 per cent of its staff.
Twitter has been looking for a buyer for some time, without success so far, while it has been losing money, and its share price has fallen 40 per cent.
Twitter is the third-largest social networking website in the world, with more than 300 million users, according to eBizMBA.com, which lists the top 10 as follows:
- Facebook – 1.1 billion users
- YouTube – 1 billion users
- Twitter – 310 million users
- LinkedIn – 255 million users
- Pinterest – 250 million users
- Google Plus – 120 million users
- Tumblr – 110 million users
- Instagram – 100 million users
- Reddit – 85 million users
- VK – 80 million users
Most enterprises these days not only use social media websites to market their sites, many of them employ someone to be responsible to their social media presence.
Not surprising when you look at the numbers of users leading websites such as Facebook and YouTube have.
But as well as the leading social networks, there are so many others and posting to them individually would be too time-consuming.
This has created a market for services which enable users to post to more than one social network at the same time, adding analytics and so on.
Here’s a list of social media management platforms:
- Sprout Social
- Viral Heat
- Send Social Media
- Social Oomph
Tweetdeck is part of Twitter but can be used to post to other social websites, like the others on the above list, which is presented in no particular order.
Other, larger companies also offer similar services, but we have not included them they are not known as social media management platforms.
Salesforce Marketing Cloud, for example, enables users to post to social media and analyse the response, but Salesforce’s core offering is its customer relations management software.
